There is a legend told in Arabian countries, Balkans, Anatolia and Central Asia for hundreds of years. The legend targets Cigans (Gypsy-Çingene). Our people suffered beause of the legend in which Cigans is introduced as a cursed low race. Our people haven't been able to find a regular job, to marry with their beloved one; our people are discriminated, scorned because of the legend. Unfortunately, even educated people also believe in the legend.
The legend full of slanders influenced some Cigans in time. They have ashamed their ancestral name. They believed that they will be able to escape from injustices and discrimination when they refused their Cigani identity. However, the legend is not a reason; it's a result. It was fabricated to insult, scorn and stigmatize Cigans. The new names they find for themselves instead of Cigan would be stigmatized with negative meanings as long as mentality scorning Cigans survives.

It's understood that the legend was fabricated by ones who don't like Cigans and prone to discrimination hundreds of years ago. Then it's spreaded from ear to ear. It makes a nuisance of ourselves. The ones fabricated the legend wanted to hide their sick mentality behind holy religional myths. This is why they added prophet Abraham, who is regarded by Muslims, Jews and Christians, in their legend as a character.
According to the legend, ram, which would be used to throw Abraham into the fire by Nemrut, didn't worked. There were angels hindering ram to work. The Devil adviced Nemrut to force a brother and a sister to have a sexual intercourse beside the ram. Nemrut followed the Devil's advice and force a brother and a sister named Cin and Gan to have a sexual intercourse there. Descendants of Cin and Gan are named as Cigan (Çingene) and they are cursed by the God. The ones fabricated the legend blame Cigans to be cursed by the God. They also announced us as a race derived from an incest relationship.
How kind of mentality could fabricate such a slander? I wonder if they were aware of what were they doing while they fabricate this legend. They used holy religional feelings to provoke people against us. They abused the name of Prophet Abraham for their reptile aim. Dear friends. The legend is full of lies. The ones fabricated the legend made some addings to a religional myth about Prophet Abraham and King Nemrut to announce Cigans a cursed race. What should we do to check the legend to be fake or not? We have to research holy books, The Koran, Bible, Torah or Psalm. There is nothing similar to the legend in The Koran, Bible, Torah or Psalm.
The real religional myth about King Nemrut and Prophet Abraham introduces the fire didn't burn Abraham as a miracle of the God. There is no relation between the real myth and Cigans. The ones fabricated the legend added some slanders to the real myth to announce Cigans as descendants of an incest relation. Either the ones fabricated the legend and the ones spread it today are responsible for our pains. We don't give them blessing.

Whenever we explain these truths some people remind us this expression "there is no smoke without fire." However, in this case there is smoke without fire. Because the legend is only a slander. Some people fabricated it without any historical evidences. Somewat it became widespread and people started to believe the legend to be truth. The truth of the matter is that, nothing else.
There are various scientifical theories about the origin of word Cigan. None of them is certain but there are some logical evidences for all of them. Some people believe that the word Cigan is derived from the name Sigynnae. Sigynnae people were mentioned by greek historian Herodotus. They were living around Danube river 2700 years ago. They were on the move in a broad area in Europe according to some claims. It's also believed that their main occupations were blacksmithing and peddling. They were travelling with carriages drawned by special Sigynnae horses.
There is an other theory claiming the word Cigan was derived from the word Çıgany used in Old Turkic Inscriptions 1500-1600 years ago. Çıgany means poor in the inscriptions according to linguist Hüseyin Yıldız who propound the theory. The word Çıgany is used in the inscriptions as the opposite of the word "Bey" ( prince ). It's also used as Yok-Çıgany in some passages in the inscriptions. This use is an important evidence of the theory on account of the fact that Gypsy people are defined as Ciganyok in many parts of Hungary today.
An other theory about the origin of the word claims that the word Cigan derived from the name of a heretical byzantine sect Athinganoi. Gypsies were identified as Athinganoi by Byzantines due to occupational similarity ( either Cigans and Athinganoi were interesting in fortune telling ) according to the theory propounded by Miklosic. Word meaning of Athinganoi is untouchable. Member of the sect believed that everybody were dirty else members of their sect. So they didn't want to touch foreigners. This is why they are identified as untouchables.
All of these theories are uncertain. However there is something certain about the origin of word Cigan. The legend about Abraham is not one of the scientifical theories explaining origin of the word.

Members of all Gypsy ethnicities have to be aware of that reality: There is nothing to be ashamed of our ancestral name. Origin of the name Cigan extends deep into history. There are various theories. It's possible to see oldest traces of our ancestral name either in Balkans in 2700 years ago and in Central Asia in Old Turkic Inscriptions 1500-1600 years ago. This ancient name have been the most inclusive and the most common name defining peripatetics of Balkans, Central Asia and Anatolia in hundreds of years.
Cigans shouldn't be daunted by lies, slanders and superstitions. It's not possible to overcome prejudices, to hinder our people to be scorned refusing our ancestral name. It's the best thing to embrace our ancient name Cigan. Each Cigan have to do something in this process. Wherever you live in, Balkans, Central Asia or Anatolia; you have to fight against the slander stigmatizing our people and our ancient name. Tell the truth ones repeating this slander.
Don't forget friends. People who have to be ashamed are not the ones whose ancient name are reviled with slanders. People who have to be ashamed are the ones who fabricate fake legends abusing name of holy historical characters to stigmatize our people as a cursed low race. We have to light the fire of truths against the ones repeating lies of past today. Sooner or later. The affirmative will has it.
