Where the Gypsies From Are: Do not Forget Anatolian Gypsies 02/4/2007

This paper is not regarding the Gypsies' origins, about which there are various discussions. Some people allege that the motherland of Gypsies is India ; on the other hand, the others assert that it is the whole world. I would like to postpone this discussion and cite another subject. It is about a deep rooted impression in our society: When the Gypsies of Turkey are mentioned, Thrace region comes to most of people's mind. For the ordinary people, Gypsies frequently evoke the symbols of Balkan culture, for example the clarinet and the Romani music. Of course, Thrace region has a distinctive place in the culture of Turkish Gypsies. No one can deny this reality. But there is another, hidden reality: The culture of Anatolian Gypsies.

The Gypsies of Turkey are from Turkey -from the region of Thrace , Black Sea, Central Anatolia, South Eastern Anatolia and Eastern Anatolia … A magnificent richness has emerged owing to mixture of the cultural values produced by the Gypsies from the different regions of Turkey with the cultures of other people throughout the history. Art? As Thrace Gypsy culture represents the clarinet and ince saz, Anatolian Gypsy culture is identified with davul-zurna, baglama and bozlak. You can see the impacts of Balkan culture on Thrace Gypsy culture, just as Middle East's and Central Asia 's on Anatolian Gypsy culture. While singing bozlak, the melancholic voice of an Anatolian Gypsy brings you from Anatolian steppes to Central Asian steppes. Economy? Commercial nomads are the ancestors of Anatolian Gypsies, like the other Gypsies from different regions. Gypsies have provided the baskets, sieves and metal things to the Anatolian villages which were forgotten on the edge of civilization. Gypsies have pulled the teeth of the peasants, circumcised their boys, become the doctor of the village and played their wedding music. Our ancestors have been the most necessity part of rural life before big technological advances. At the present time, when the traditional arts are dissolved by the technology, Gypsies work as agricultural laborers or do the most difficult jobs that are not undertaken by anyone.

As www.cingeneyiz.org family, we accept the Gypsy culture as an important value of our society. Likewise, we do not think that the Gypsy culture is just composed of Lüleburgaz, Kirklareli, Edirne . Others (for example the Gypsies from Çorum, Yozgat, Konya , Artvin, Van, Denizli, Trabzon , Bursa , Kastamonu, Çankiri, exc.) enrich the Gypsy culture with their cultural products and contributions to economical life, too. As we indisputably evaluate our culture as a value of this geography, we consider all Gypsies from all parts of Turkey as suffering laborers of this culture. In this sense, we try to mention about all of them in our site as far as we are able to.

We hope that our attitude would set an example and Anatolian Gypsies would be considered as important as they deserve.
