We, as Çingeneyiz.org team, insist on identifying ourselves with the word Gypsy (Cigany). Some of our friends and audiences of our web page wonder the reason of our insistence about the issue. We will explain why we published our web with the name cingeneyiz (amen Cigan isinam-we are Gypsy) and insist on using the word today in this article.
Here is the reason of our insistence to use the word Gypsy:
1) The words like Roma, Pavee, Yeniche, Quinquis, Ashkali are the name of different ethnic groups. The word Gypsy (Cigany) is the name of an universal community containing the ethnic groups in Middle East, Central Asia, Anatolia and Europe. Tribes whose lands, herds and forestal areas were captured by violence started to subsist on producing some craft productions and providing some services. The word Gypsy identifies the descendants of all these tribes. We want to be the voice of the universal community consisting of these peoples instead of representing only one of them. This is why we are Gypsies.
2) Most of Gypsy occupations dissappeared after spreading of industry. Our peoples who had subsisted on traditional Gypsy occupations before started to subsist on jobs with low income and unpreferred by the rest of societies they live in. Although there are a few Gypsy doctors, lawyers, politician, most of our peoples still live under hard life conditions. The worst barrier hindering our peoples to have a better economic situation is the prejudices non-Gypsies have about us. These prejudices could only be overcomed if we bravely accept our Gypsy identity and show that the prejudices are rubbish! This is why we are Gypsies.
3) Some people slandered to the word Gypsy (Çingene-Cigany) rascally. Superstitions claiming the word Gypsy and Gypsies are related with people who did wrong to prophets and cursed by the god have been made up to stigmatize us. These superstitions are comletely fake. There are nothing in holy books supporting superstitions targeting Gypsies. There isn't even a word reviling the word Gypsy or Gypsies in the Koran, Bible, Torah, Psalm. These superstitions were maden up to in famize our peoples. There is only one way to clear our name: We have to accept our Gypsy identity and fight against superstitions using the word Gypsy. This is why we are Gypsies.
4) Terrible slanders are written in some dictionaries or encyclopaedias about Gypsies and the word Gypsy. Some of our brothers and sisters believed that it's possible not to be affected from these prejudices if they refuse to be identified as Gypsy. However, these slanders are not about a word. They are about us. Altough it is possible that you could convince non-Gypsies to identify you with an other word, the ones who speak about "dirty Gypsies" or "thief Gypsies" will continue to have these prejudices and speak about "dirty Roma" or "thief Roma". There is only one to get rid off these slanders: We have to fight against slanders and slanderers accepting Gypsy identity. This is why we are Gypsies.
